THE WORLDS LARGEST BOTTLE OF WHISKY EVER-INTREPID.

We felt like the name captured the entire project in 1 word. To strive forth into the unknown with a project of this magnitude was both fearless and adventurous.

This project came around a couple of years ago when we were discussing ways in which to promote Fah Mai Holdings Group (FMHG) and Rosewin Holdings (RH). How could we get the most reach on social and mainstream media? How could we make this really unique? We had previously seen the two world records for whisky bottles, one held by Edrington’s - 228 L Famous Grouse bottle for largest bottle of Scotch and the 105.3 L Tomintoul bottle that holds the largest bottle of single malt Scotch. We wanted to beat both records by a long shot and have gone for a 300 L bottle of single malt Scotch.

The project that we’ve all called “the big bottle” for the past 24 months has been lead by Mr Daniel Monk our President. He’s worked on it from start to finish, from finding the bottle fabricators in Eastern Europe to running up Mr Ranulph Fiennes garden to get him involved, more on this later.

So it started with figuring out how to create the most unique piece in whisky history coupled with a way to help and promote young explorers and their causes. So we asked ourselves, what makes a valuable bottle? We decided it needed great whisky inside it, a good cause, some renowned people involved, and it had to be big, in every way.

But first we set about finding a company willing to build a bottle large enough to fit 300 L of liquid without breaking, we ventured to Eastern Europe for this. There was a lot of negotiation and planning involved, a number of bottle designs and regulations to stick to in order to break the record, for example the big bottle (BB) had to be an exact replica of an existing bottle, as per the Guinness Book rules. We managed to settle on a fair price of just over €40,000 for the bottle, and over €2,000 for the cork (which in its own right could break another world record). The bottle is so large that it had to be fabricated in 3 parts, bottom, middle and top, then combined together with some ingenious glass fusing.

Whilst the bottle was being fabricated we started looking at what to put in the bottle, as we hold a huge portfolio of ageing whisky we weren’t short of choice. But Daniel wanted to make it extra special, we decided to reach out to our shareholders and ask them if they could contribute to make something 1 of 1 that people would be in awe over. We decide that filling it with 30 plus Year old Macallan might do the trick. To put the value of this into perspective, a 30 YO original Sherry Oak Macallan sells for £4-5k+ and an independent bottler such as Gordon & Macphail sells for between £3-4.5k+. There are some variations of 30YO Macallan that sell for far greater than this, and that’s just for one 70cl bottle. The BB will hold roughly 428 70cl bottles worth of Macallan Sherry Oak 32 YO single malt scotch, I’ll leave you to do the maths on this.

Investing In Whisky

After securing the whisky the next thing was to find some renowned people and a cause, and who better to represent Fearlessness and Adventure than Sir Ranulph Fiennes, back in 1984 the year I was born Ran was described by the Guinness Book as the worlds greatest living explorer, and he’s still thought of as that.

We tried contacting him through various media outlets to no avail, which lead Daniel to believe the only way to contact him was to find him in person. Daniel went to the small town where Ran now resides, asked the postman where he though Ran lived as it was unclear, and in a moment of courage, bounded into Rans front garden, across the lawn, only to be stopped by a large security agent. At this point I believe Daniel thought, “well this hasn’t turned out as I had expected” but alas this was not the end. Daniel explained his reasons for being there, the agent called Ran who happened to be out doing his daily PT and a while later Ran emerged from the bushes at the end of the Garden and greeted Daniel. After discussions Ran agreed to be involved in the project as long as the Marie Curie charity were to benefit also, thus adding some philanthropic purpose to the project. With Ran involved 10 other renowned explorers joined up to the project with their respective causes.

The project hasn’t gone without its challenges, we had hoped to unveil this monument of a bottle at Royal Ascott, then the Whisky Stramash, as well as the Edinburgh festival and The London Whisky Show, all of which were cancelled due to COVID 19 and the social distancing laws. At one point we were at a loss for how to get this done when out of the blue Duncan Taylor, the infamous, family owned spirits company agreed to allow us to break the record at their premises as long as we followed the government guidelines.

We snapped this opportunity up as not only would their involvement boost the project, they would be able to bottle the 50cl replicas and 5cl miniatures. So from this project what we are looking at is:

1. 300L Intrepid bottle with all 11 Explorers presented.

2. 11 x 12 sets of 50cl bottles presenting individual explorers.

3. 11 x 12 sets of 5cl miniatures to go with the 50cl bottles.

All of the 50cl bottles will be boxed in beatifully painted and hot foiled hard wood boxes, with the 5cl in similar card boxes.

The BB will be sold off as a set with the two Macallan 1989 casks at auction with an entire set of bottles to the highest bidder.
