The Power of Whisky: £6.6 Million Raised to Transform the Lives of Over 3,000 Scottish Youth

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND – More than 3,000 young people in Scotland have been successfully guided into employment, education, or training thanks to the significant funds raised through three high-profile Distillers One of One auctions. These figures were unveiled during a special event in Edinburgh, highlighting the profound social impact of the Scotch whisky industry.

A Legacy of Philanthropy

The Distillers’ Charity—the philanthropic arm of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, which dates back to 1638—has held three major auctions at Hopetoun House in 2021, 2023, and 2025. The most recent auction in 2025 alone raised £2.3 million, bringing the total amount garnered across the three events to £6.6 million.

The Youth Action Fund: Driving Real Results

The proceeds from these auctions are managed by the Youth Action Fund to support six key charities: Aberdeen Foyer, Action for Children, Enable Works, Family Action in Rogerfield & Easterhouse (Fare), Street League, and the Talk About Trust. These organizations focus on disadvantaged young people aged 16 to 25 living in areas connected to distilleries and Scotch whisky facilities.

Key milestones achieved include:

  • Over 3,000 total outcomes reached since 2022.
  • 1,000 young people reached "employability outcomes" in the past year alone.
  • An employability outcome is defined as securing a job, training, an apprenticeship, or pursuing further education.

Grant Gordon, chairman of the Distillers’ Charity, noted that independent research by Research Scotland described the fund’s approach as "flexible," "person-centred," and "holistic".

Voices of Change: Personal Success Stories

The event featured moving testimonials from young individuals whose lives were changed by these programs:

  • Karmela Jones: Now working in the construction industry, Jones credited Street League with helping her manage neurodivergency and building her confidence to ask for help.
  • Annalise Clark: Overcoming a traumatic past and self-isolation, Clark developed a career as a welder with the help of Enable Works and will begin a role at BAE Systems in August.
  • Michael Fairweather: Struggling with concentration in school, Fairweather used the support of Action for Children to develop the teamwork and confidence needed for a career in construction.
  • Abigail Clayton: Previously lacking self-esteem and confidence, Clayton joined a childcare course that helped her "come out of her shell" and grow into a professional role.

An Industry as a Force for Good

Beanie Geraedts-Espey, managing director of the Distillers One of One auction, expressed deep gratitude to the distilleries that donated rare bottles and casks. She emphasized that the Youth Action Fund is funded solely by these auctions.

"The £6.6 million we have raised to date has been the product of passion, determination, and utter conviction in the power of our industry to be a force for change, prosperity, and joy," Geraedts-Espey concluded.
